Designer Dog Treats For A Designer Dog
73Designer Dog Treats
My little dog on crack...
It's a little ball of white fluff blazing throughout the house. She acts as if she has a case of ADHD. I just call her my little dog on crack. This little fluff of mine reminds me daily of a child. I often tell my daughter that her dog acts just like her...picky, stubborn, and an attitude to match.
Bella is considered a designer dog. She is a 50/50 mix of Lhasa Apso and Bichon Frise. This breed of dog is perfect for families that have allergies. My husband is severely allergic to animals and will claim that she doesn't bother his allergies unless she hasn't been bathed in awhile.
Before one decides to race out and purchase one of these dogs, do the homework it takes first to make sure this dog breed is right for you. This breed can be hyper at times and a hand full for someone that doesn't have time for them. Their characteristics are just like a child's.
Bella
I don't think so, Mom...
I was amazed to find that our little rebel doesn't like store bought treats. I have tried a vast number of them, only to be given the same reply. A quick sniff. A sneeze like it was the most vile thing she ever snorted. Then a procession of rubbing her nose in the carpet or on my sofa to rid herself of the smell. That is when I did some research and began to make my own treats. There was only one downfall I have encountered since doing this. She doesn't like her treats to look like cookies. They had to be stars, hearts, or little balls, she can toss in the air and play with. (Sound familiar?) They can't be too big or look like a dog biscuit. (Did I mention that this breed can be very picky?)
Here are some different cookie cutters to use for your next homemade treat.

You want me to eat what?...
Her favorite flavor of meat is chicken, and believe me when I say that she knows the difference between fake chicken and real. She is the only dog so far that I have come across that doesn't like fish. To her, they are only good for rolling in. She will eat a burger, but only if it is properly cut up. The same with an other large pieces of meat. (My husband has taken to calling her “Princess” when feeding her.)
I once was told that to help a dog's coat stay shiny, one needs to feed their canine raw eggs. I did this one day, only to have her walk to her bowl, sniff it, and look at me like I had lost my mind. She then turned, stuck her nose in the air, and went to sulk in her tent by the sofa.
Supply or Demand
I have, on many occasions, chuckled at watching how my little fluffy eats her food. When called-if she wasn't already sitting on the arm of the sofa watching me-she would come sliding, from a dead run, across the linoleum of the kitchen to a halt in front of her bowl. I would then have to carry the bowl to where we were eating, so she could eat with us. If she was eating her dog food that day, because she didn't like what I was serving for humans, she would gingerly pick out the pieces of dog food she didn't like and drop them on the floor by her bowl. (Mr. P. said it would be nice if she learned how to pick up her messes she left behind.) The others, she would flick in the air to play with first.
There are the occasions when she isn't sure what it was I gave her, or if she likes it, so she will cautiously stretch her body (like a cat stretches) till she can see what is in the bowl. If it looks interesting, she will come in for a sniff. After that, she will either eat it, or act out her favorite "that was vile" dance.
When it comes to her demands for food, she will find us in the computer room, and tap our leg with her paw. (It is during these times that I will often feel an ornery streak come on.) We will go through the procession of questions...do you need to go potty?...do you want to play?...do you want to eat?. Each of these questions will be followed by a tilt of her head one way or another till we hit the question she is listening for. Then she will bounce off our leg, sneezing and snorting her excitement, till we get up to address her needs. Any pouting she does will either be from the comforts of her tent, or with a friendly steaming pile on any cloths left on the floor. She has quite the character.
Naturally my little pet won't show her charming personality for the camera.
Where is mine?...
It has become a daily ritual now for her to drink coffee in the mornings with Mr. P.. This came by chance when she was thirsty on a trip and the only thing we had on hand to drink was coffee; with milk and sugar. Now, she will only have her's like Daddy. (I tried to break her of drinking coffee by giving her a cup of black coffee. She sneezed in it and wiped her nose on my leg.) When we aren't looking, and have left a stray cup somewhere- with a swallow in it- we can be sure that she will find a way to drink it.
To help others whom may have a picky dog or would just like to make some home-made treats from them, I have listed a couple of recipes I use. (And she has given her approval over

Inquiring minds want to know, do you spoil your pet?Loading...
Bella is such a cutie. I read your hub to my 2 and they want to know if they could come for a visit for about 2 months. They also asked me why I can't make them food like this. Now I have to try your recipes ... Thanks :) I really enjoyed reading about Bella, she sounds like a wonderful member of your family. I thought I was spoiling mine by making them liver or chicken gizzards for breakfast until I read your hub.
I buy mine heart shaped peanut butter cookies. Bella might them since they are heart shaped. I think they are a Mother Hubbard brand and I buy them at Pet Smart or Pet Value.
Hit all the buttons!
Cute! What a lucky dog you have! So it should be!... having a pet means they are part of the family-its just great seeing the yummy treats you make for your dog. Chopped Liver Biscuits must be the doggie equivalent of Choc Chip Cookies.
great hub, I do spoil my pet whenever I do get the chance that's for sure.
Hi TlP, great piece on the breed, so much like a mini Schnauzer that started the home made treats here. Your video doesn't play it reads "this video private" A good read any way, thanks,
Dusty
thhat was interesting
Hi, I know all about dogs that are fussy eaters! lol! our dogs were spoiled, they always ate chicken and liver, I used to say that they ate better than us! yours is so cute though, they can get away with anything! and I love the chicken biscuits, cheers nell
Great hub! I love your sense of humor and your vivid descriptions of Bella's lively personality. Those dog recipes look healthier than the food most humans eat!
Voted up across the board.
TLP. great little video and so well behaved. I in the past have owned 2 Lhasa Apso female dogs and they were destructo dogs, any thing fabric was fair game and coming in to a room where a recliner or couch cushion got targeted they thoroughly bit by bit had it scattered every where. I'm chief pooper scooper here and take care to make sure all are healthy from that view. Those two passed foam for 4 days after and I found that they just were not, even though they had 3 Rottys to terrorize, be a dog that could be left with out human interaction for a day of my going to the VA or grocery shopping. Taking them was not possible due to the 106 degree heat of summer. I used a large cage to stick them in with available water and they were fed on a schedule that they lacked nothing during my trips to town. What ever bedding that went in was destroyed in short 4 hour absences, they needed a home with 24 hour human care. They were smart and fun but had to be placed in a better environment for their needs. Normally I would have put them out in a fenced enclosure but the birds of prey and the other predators here, I just couldn't chance that option. They were over their first year where the teething on wooden chair leg braces and a few thing that I really wished they hadn't destroyed was finally past and they were spayed, fully Vetted and house trained, so I could offer them up as a pair of sisters and not separable, I provided pictures of the destruction and didn't hold back anything letting prospective owners fully aware of their "Tasmanian Devil" properties the fee was free as long as I could come visit to see where they were going and a set of papers drawn up that they come back to me if the decision was made that they were unruly to the point they had to go.
Turned out that I met two 60 plus Ladies looking to get a companion and they were sisters who lived in a Baptist town home community where they bought their homes but could not sell them, they went back to the Baptist organization who sold them to someone who met the criteria to become a resident and lived across a greenbelt from one another. I visited them and it was a great atmosphere and I knew that was the place, an all senior Baptist retirement villa. That was 7 years ago and with the holidays coming I'll be stopping in to visit the two Ladies and see how the two dogs are doing. I'm happy they got a home that though divided, they get to see each other often. I was surprised and happy to hear that they had destroyed nothing in either home. They are great little companion dogs and while my Mini Schnauzer fares well with my working dogs, it seems the breed of the Lhasa needs pretty well 24 hour contact, and I was hoping that they would fit in with a pack of dogs.
They are quite fun when I was able to either set back and play with them or nap with them but leaving them alone wasn't possible.
I find that people who treat their dogs as family are often warm and friendly people. I think God made dogs to help us as well as teach us unconditional love. My Rottys and Fiest are all working dogs but also live as family in my subterranean home as well as going for jeep rides, horse back rides and hikes into the Tonto National Park that borders my property on three sides.
I've rambled on too much, thank you for a gteat article.
Blessings,
Dusty

That's too funny you should have a dog named Bella. My sister's dog is named Bella and my kids have a sweet little black terrier/spaniel/something mix they call Bella...and all three certainly live up to their name "bella!"

We have a goat that we totally spoil and she is now pregnant so it's double the attention. That dog sounds delightful, you shouldn't give your animals raw eggs or meat because of salmonella poisoning, I am glad she didn't eat it or she could have been really sick.
